Sam Hurley Hess

Mr. Sam Hurley Hess, age 72, of Belfast, Virginia, passed away Monday (August 24, 2015) in a Richlands, Virginia hospital. Born December 18, 1942 in Venia, Virginia, he was a son of the late Howard Haywood and Gladys Nuckles Hess. A Council High School graduate, he moved to northern Virginia after graduation, but back to the area in 1983 upon employment as an electrician with United Coal Company. Later, he had operated the Texaco station at Rosedale, Virginia and owned and operated Sam Hess Refrigeration. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Draper Austin and Beulah Breeding, and one brother, Hassell Hess. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Hess of the home; one daughter, Leah Hess and Lorelei, of Manassas, Virginia; one son, Todd Hess and wife, Wendy of Hendersonville, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Conner Hess, Alec Hess, and Jacob Hess; three step-sons, Donald Harris, Thomas Harris, and Wesley Harris; one sister, Wilma Sue Severt and husband, Tom of Glendale Springs, North Carolina; one brother, Clinton Hess and wife, Frances of Rosedale, Virginia; eight step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Jeff Ball officiating. Interment will follow in the Austin Cemetery at Venia, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Gregory Austin, Gary Austin, Jeff Hess, Wes Hess, Andrew Hess, and Josh Barker.
