Funeral services for George Mowrer, 83, of Portales, will be at 10:00 AM, Tues., Aug. 25, 2015 at First Baptist Church in Portales, with Dr. David McFadden officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Wayne Anderson, Randy Rankin, Larry Teal, Chris Duncan, Barry Walker and Ronnie Johns serving as pallbearers. All other deacons of the First Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. George Edward Mowrer was born Oct. 7, 1931 in Nara Visa, NM to the home of Edith (Haney) and Harley G. Mowrer, and died at his home in Portales, Aug. 19, 2015. The family moved to Tucumcari when George was 17, where he attended Tucumcari High School. George served two years in the US Army, and completed his high school requirements after coming home, graduating in 1955. On Oct. 7, 1954 in Tucumcari, he was married to Ruby Cothern. George graduated from Eastern New Mexico University in May of 1968, with a major in Religion, and a minor in Geography. He began teaching Auto Mechanics at Tucumcari High School, and later moved to Alamogordo where he taught in the local high school. In 1975, George went to work at the White Sands Missile Range for a short time, and then went to work as a mechanic at a local auto dealership. In 1978, he moved his family to Portales, and he began working at ENMU, where he ran the Motor Pool until his retirement. George was a dedicated and faithful Christian, and served as a Deacon at First Baptist Church for many years. During that time, he served as Chairman of the Deacons, as well as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, as well as teaching Sunday School classes on occasion. George regularly participated in activities with both the Portales and Clovis Senior Citizens, and often went to the lunches at the Community Services Center. He was a member of the Tucumcari Historical Society. He took a great interest in the museum in Tucumcari, and usually attended their annual dinners. George made a habit of walking several miles each day. He was a very gentle and generous gentleman. He had a hobby of restoring old computers and teaching people how to use them. If someone needed their car worked on, George was always glad to help. Above all, he was a dedicated Christian and a loving family man. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Eddy and Judy Mowrer and Jesse and Donna Mowrer both of Portales; three daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Stephen Maricle of Albuquerque, Ida and Chuck Haxton of Cook, MN and Bonita and Michael Tompkins of Germany; ten grandchildren, Daniel Haxton, Jared (Jennifer) Haxton, Chelsea (Paul) Raukar, Jeffery Mowrer, Russell (Heather) Mowrer, Clifford Mowrer, Angela (Richard) Hall, Marissa Mowrer, Deana (Christopher) Tanner and Daniel Tompkins; ten great-grandchildren; a brother, Elwood Mowrer of Auburn, CA; and a sister, Vivian Brown of Tucumcari. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Elsie Ashcraft and Sylvia Neighbors, as well as by his beloved wife, Ruby, who died Sept. 14, 2006 after almost 52 years of marriage.
