Peter Soule Obituary

Peter B. Soule, 80, passed away with his wife by his side, July 20, 2015 after a courageous battle with MSA. He was the beloved husband of Myrna Soule of Union for 21 years. Peter was born on November 5, 1934 to Karl K. Soule and Barbara Priest Soule. He attended Kimball Union Academy, The University of Maine, and Wentworth Institute. Peter served in the army during the Korean War from 1954 to 1956. Peter was employed by the Monmouth Canning Company, a family owned business, the Stewart Canning Company, and Allen’s Blueberry Freezer. He was also employed as a bus driver for MSAD #40 until retirement and served the Knox County Sheriff’s Department for many years. His first passion was being a firefighter on all levels for his entire life. From when he was a young boy in Cape Elizabeth, on a bike holding onto the ladder on the side of a fire truck heading out to a call to being a firefighter for the Union Fire Department for over 50 years, Asst. Chief, and then Chief. He was instrumental in specking out one of Union’s fire trucks and helping to plan for the building of the current fire station in Union, it was evident that Peter had firefighting in his spirit. In spite of his illness, Peter attended the Annual Fire Department Banquet in April of this year. His love for fire department involvement spanned over his whole life. He was very proud that his son and grandson are carrying on his love of the fire department. Moosehead Lake and his camp at Lily Bay were also a huge part of his life. He enjoyed showing his children his love of Moosehead. Peter loved just being at camp enjoying all his many camp friends and family, always sharing and teaching them how to truly enjoy Moosehead and the “Moosehead Way” of doing things - be it snowmobiling, boating, fishing, moosing, working on firewood or “wheelering” - and all the while telling us “Whatever goes on at camp, STAYS AT CAMP!” Peter was also active in the Union Masonic Lodge, #31, and the Kora Shrine for many years. He was a life member of the Knox County Firefighters Association and was one of the original founders of Union Ambulance Service. Peter was also a member of the Peoples United Methodist Church of Union. Peter was preceded in death by his step-daughter Heather A. Turner-Lappin and his parents, Karl K. Soule and Barbara Priest Soule. Peter’s surviving family: Myrna Soule, Peter’s wife, of Union; children: Kassi Soule of Union; Kevin Soule and his wife, Debbie, of Union; Katherine Ames and her husband, Donald, of Warren; and step-son, Craig Turner and his wife, April, of Freedom; grandchildren: Justin Ames of Danvers, MA; Kristin Ames of Warren; Samantha Soule of Westbrook; Ryan Soule of Union; Wesley, William, and Casey Turner all of Freedom; sister, Mary Davidson and her husband, Wendell, of Harpswell; brother, John Soule and his wife, Debbie, of Tucson, AZ; mother-in-law, Joyce Bunker of Union; former wife, Marcia Soule of Union; brothers-in-law: David Bunker and his wife, Jane, of Morrill; Blaine Bunker and his wife, Donna of Albion; Daniel Blair and his wife, Jena, of Shreveport, LA; sister-in-law, Paula Bourassa and her husband, John, of Waldo; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, John and Sue Hinkley.
