Barbara Smith Winchester, Virginia Obituary

Barbara Smith

Barbara Gray Armistead Smith (“Boogee”) went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 22, 2015, following a brief illness. She was a devoted wife and a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who was preceded in death by her beloved husband W. Harrington Smith Jr, in 2004. Boogee was a quiet and highly intelligent woman, who was an avid student of history. She could recite, on command, the most intricate details of world history, but her passion was The Civil War. Her wit was quick and sharp, and no one ever had to wonder what was on her mind. She was a remarkable person. She was a physical therapist by profession, who attended Roanoke College and was a graduate of The Medical College of Virginia. She had a photographic memory, and her knowledge of anatomy was completely preserved years after her retirement. She was the daughter of her beloved parents Howard Lacy Armistead and Lena Reynolds Armistead. She is survived by two children, Drury Lacy Armistead, MD, and Elizabeth Harrington Smith, and her devoted brother, Howard Lacy Armistead Jr, MD. She leaves behind five grandchildren: Kenneth Armistead Fautt, Caylee Erin Rushing, Lacy Harrington Arthur, Veda Singh Armistead, and Asha Lacy Armistead. She also leaves three great-grandchildren and her dear nephews and niece, Howard Lacy Armistead III, Ashby Gray Armistead, and Lacey Ann Armistead. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Jones Funeral Home Chapel in Winchester with Rev. Mike Mayton officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
