East Millinocket – Walter “Bud” Heal, 81, died Friday, July 17 at home surrounded by family. He was born in Millinocket on August 13, 1933 to Beatrice Bryenton Heal and Durward Sawyer Heal. Bud enjoyed childhood summers at his grandparents’ camp on Cold Stream Pond with his cousins Bruce and Billy and many summer vacations hiking and camping with his father throughout Baxter Park, sleeping under the stars. He was active in high school sports, playing on multiple championship teams in basketball and tennis. He graduated in 1951 from Schenck High School. Bud was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving from 1953-1956 primarily in Long Island, NY and the Philippines. After his discharge he married the love of his life and best friend, Elizabeth “Betty” Dentremont. He headed back to school juggling classes and family graduating in 1961 from the University of Maine Orono, receiving a degree in Chemical Engineering with a Fifth -Year Pulp and Paper Certificate. He spent his professional life working for Great Northern Paper in various positions, retiring in 1989 as Mill Manager of the Millinocket plant. Bud played many rounds of golf with his buddies in Millinocket and in Lakeland, FL, as well as cards or Dominos as a couple. He truly cherished his time with family especially at their camp, “Heals’ Harem”, on Ambajejus Lake. He was active in his community serving on the school board, CARE Group, a member of the First Congregational Church UCC, and the University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation. Bud is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty, and his “four good girls” and their husbands, Kathy and Tim Moran of Winterport, Peggy and Tom Hsu of Birmingham, AL, Barbara and Kenny Miller of Winterport, and Gloria and Todd Nicholson of North Yarmouth; his sister Beverly Balise of Belmont, MA; grandchildren Megan Moran, Patrick Moran and girlfriend Whitney Ranger, Sarabeth and Carianne Miller, Emma, Claire and William Nicholson; niece Suzi Holmes, husband Billy and son Colin; cousin Mary Heal, husband Keith Kologie and son Andrew; sisters-in-law Marjorie Noddin and Gloria McElroy; brothers-in-law Frank Dentremont and wife Theresa, Arthur Dentremont and wife Jeanne, Jim Dentremont; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents, his grandparents Ross and Emma (Sawyer) Heal, Walter and Alzada (Moore) Bryenton; uncles Linton Heal, Maurice Heal, wife Frances and sons Bruce and Billy, Thomas Heal, wife Evelyn and son Thomas; sisters-in-law Margaret DeWitt, Irene Parsons and son John, Helen Dore and son Danny Pound, Mona Dentremont, Frances Dentremont and Betty Dentremont; brothers-in-law Lionel Noddin, Ralph DeWitt, Charles Parsons, Howard Dentremont, Gerald Pound, Charles Dore, Al Doering, Rod McElroy and David Balise. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Friends are invited to visit with the family 10AM-12 noon, at the First Congregational Church of East Millinocket, Tuesday, July 21 where a funeral service will be held at noon. Interment will be at the East Millinocket Cemetery, with military honors, and a reception will be afterwards at the church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, UCC, 11 Maple St., East Millinocket, ME, 04430.
