He studied Geology and Geochemistry at the University of Kansas and was an All-American javelin athlete, even participating in Olympic trials for the 1976 Olympics. After earning his masters' degree in Geochemistry, he moved to Houston and worked for Exxon for 31 years until his retirement. Roger's interests were widespread: he was an avid photographer, intrepid traveler, ardent sports fan, intense student of genealogy, and superb grill master. No one could cook a steak like Roger! Even more, he was a loving husband, father, son, and friend who will be greatly missed by those left behind. Roger is survived by his devoted wife of 31 years, Rosemary Stein, his son Robert Kinkaid Hammond and his wife Christy Treat Hammond, and son Richard Warren Hammond, as well as his mother, sisters, Maryann Hammond and Susie Chapman, extended family and many friends.
