Dorothy Lemley Haines

Dorothy Anne Lemley Haines, 94, of Winchester, VA died Tuesday July 14th, 2015, in Winchester Medical Center. Dot was born in 1921, the first of three children to Eldridge Marvin and Ruth Wenona Lemley. She was an active part of the Stephen City, VA community from early childhood. Even as a child she was often the Stephen City United Church picnic entertainment, reciting long poems and scriptures. She graduated from Madison College with a Bachelor of Arts in Home Economics. Her first job was serving as the head dietician for the U.S. War Department in Washington, D.C. during WW2. She then began a life-long career and mission in teaching. Dot taught for 32 years in the Winchester School System, mostly at Virginia Avenue/Charlotte DeHart Elementary School under the guidance of Miss DeHart. Along with her city teaching was her love of Sunday school teaching at Braddock Street United Methodist Church, where she and her beloved husband, Doug, belonged and were faithful members for many, many years. Dot is survived by one sister, June Joyce Lemley Thompson and husband Alan, her daughter, Jayanne Wemmers, two grandchildren, Susan Allison Pellettieri (son-in-law Glen Pellettieri), and Jason Wemmers. “GiGi” was blessed with two great-grandchildren whom she absolutely adored, Chase Douglas Pellettieri and Ava Charlotte Pellettieri. She was predeceased by a younger brother, John Franklin Lemley. Dot was the last remaining member of her lively card group. Dot was a voracious reader who loved and pondered the Scriptures always. A Committal Service will be conducted onFriday, July 17, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at Mount Hebron Cemetery. The funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m. on Friday at Braddock Street United Methodist Church in Winchester, with Reverend Kirk Nave and Reverend Tony Layman officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5-7p.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester. Memorial contributions may be made to Stephens City United Methodist Church, or Braddock Street United Methodist Church.
