Gertrude Schaan Obituary

Gertrude Christina Schaan was born May 24, 1917 in Young, Saskatchewan to Charles and Mary Dengler. She had five brothers and two sisters. Her parents passed away when Gertie was very young and was then cared for by her brother Louis. Gertie married Gabriel Schaan December 31, 1934. In 1941 they moved to a farm three miles west of Young where she helped with the farming and cared for Geep’s father. In 1948 they moved into Young where Geep was employed, and Gertie did laundry for the oil drillers. In 1951 Geep and Gertie moved into Watrous with their daughters Theresa, Agnes and Clara. Geep was employed with the Watrous Schools as caretaker. Gertrude was a homemaker and cared for their children. In 1953 their only son Garry was born. She was a longtime St. Ann’s CWL member and always enjoyed when ladies from the church stopped by to see her and have tea. Throughout the years Gertie was an avid gardener, enjoying every moment with her flowers and listening and feeding the birds in her yard in Watrous. She was always available for a long chat when neighbors and friends and family would stop by. Many hours were spent crafting while Gertie would sew her famous “sock monkeys”. She was a crafter extrordinaire coming up with unique ideas using any scraps she could get her hands on. Mom was a baker, always baking tarts, pies cookies and angel food cake and always more than willing to provide her baking as a “tip” to tradespeople that came to her house to make repairs for her. Of course we her family knew of her tradesperson skills remembering when Mom would fix concrete, plumbing, clean out the eave troughts as best as she could being as independent as possible. And this was only 10 years ago at the young age of 88! Grandma was a jokester always looking to get dressed up in something silly to make her children and grandchildren laugh. Her children and grandchildren were always very important to her. She was always so interested in what they were doing and would phone her children regularly for long conversations. The love of her life Gabriel “Geep” Schaan passed away in 1993. She was determined to carry on in her own home and did so until 2012 when she was starting to get tired and it was best for her to live in an environment that allowed her to live with few worries. Her short time in Harmony House gave her entertainment and well being for the time she had left to spend with us. Mom passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday July 8, 2015, at her suite in Harmony House, Watrous District Health Complex. We are sincerely thankful for the compassionate care she received while in Harmony House. Thank you so much to the staff of Watrous & District Health Complex. She was predeceased by her husband Gabriel and daughters Clara and Theresa. Gertie is survived by her daughter Agnes Bourgeault, her son Garry Schaan (Kathy) , nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Her 98 years were filled with many emotions as life tends to do but she was a very strong willed lady and we love her and respect her for that. We will miss you but we are so very thankful to have had you with us for so many years of memories and we are now comforted to know that you are at peace.
