Juanita Moore Obituary

JUANITA MOORE was born in Filbert (#9), West Virginia on August 23, 1926 to Harry R. and Millie Moore. She was the 6th of 13 children. JUANITA graduated from Gary Negro High School in 1943. After graduating from high school, her “business/entrepreneur’ sense, which was visible at an early age, kicked in full gear starting first with a stop in Washington DC where she worked as a secretary. Her next stop was Columbus, Ohio where she settled and built a reputation over a 60-year period as a “professional, no nonsense, get-the-job done” business person. She obtained her broker’s license and received an award for selling the most FHA homes. Her many business enterprises included being an insurance agent with Atlanta Life Insurance; a restaurant owner of the St. James Ribs, the Novelty Bar, and Juanita’s Ribs; and a property manager at Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority where she retired after 35 years. Juanita assisted Dr. Reverend Phale D. Hale in a number of business and real estate ventures including the Mt.Vernon Plaza. Her many accomplishments earned her recognition as a candidate for Who’s Who in Black America. JUANITA has been a member of Union Grove Baptist church since her arrival to Columbus in 1952. She loved her church and was involved in the Missionary Circle, the Usher Board, and any other contribution she could make to serve the Lord and to serve her church family. JUANITA’S favorite pastime was shopping and finding the “best deals” which were shared with family and friends. Family was very important to her and she was dedicated to helping any family member in need. Juanita loved family gatherings and you could hear her hearty laugh throughout. To the family she was known as the ultimate peacemaker. She was very proud to be a “Moore” and made sure everyone else in the family feel the same! JUANITA was predeceased by her parents, Harry R. and Millie Irving Moore Sr.; brothers, William R. Moore, Harry Moore, Julius Moore, Charles Moore, and Gerald Moore; and sisters, Frances Moore, Catherine Moore, Corinthia Moore, Annette Moore Neal, and Rosa Lee Gray. JUANITA leaves to share and cherish her many memories her devoted daughter, LaVerne Mayo (Lewis Center, Ohio); a special nephew and niece, William Moore (Houston, Texas) and Vicki L. Neal (Columbus, Ohio) whom she treated like her own children; two grandsons, Gary Champion Jr. (Ashlee) and Mychal Mayo of Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren; one sister and one brother, Greta Berry and David Moore of Columbus, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Marva Ann Moore (Gerald) of Dayton, Ohio; and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
