Donald Espenshade Obituary

Donald Lee Espenshade, Sr., 80, of Elizabethtown, passed away Monday, June 8, 2015, at his home with his family by his side. Born in Oberlin on September 2, 1934, he was the son of the late Harold Thomas Espenshade and Irene Reynolds Maletestinic. Don retired as an Electrical Engineer from the former AMP, Inc., and had worked for Sandia National Laboratories and the former Bell Telephone Company. He trained race horses especially Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds. Don also taught Mathematics at Pennsylvania State University and in Germany. He was a 1952 graduate of the former Swatara Township High School; graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree with honors from Syracuse University, NY; and was a member of the first Medical Class at M.S. Hershey Center. Don was a member of Neidig Memorial United Methodist Church, Oberlin. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association; and a member of the Oberlin Fire Company. Don was an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing. Don was a “Jack of All Trades” who shared his wisdom with his children. He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 61 years, Betty L. Miller Espenshade, whom he married on August 21, 1954; two sons, Donald L. Espenshade, Jr. companion of Callie Jenkins of Carlisle, and David J. Espenshade husband of Kendra of Wilmington, NC; one daughter, Susan J. Bonilla wife of Joseph of Hummelstown; eight grandchildren, Lisa M. Rider wife of Brent M., Kelsey L. Espenshade companion of Nick Sechrist, Justin M. Worley husband of Jessica, Benjamin R. Espenshade husband of Jen, Bradford S. Espenshade companion of Kara Collins, Nicholas A. Espenshade, Christopher M. Espenshade, and Tyler J. Espenshade; three great grandchildren, Gavin Michael Worley, Ella Grace Espenshade, and Reid Coen Worley; three sisters, Joyce Lebo wife of Billof Virginia Beach, VA, Linda Glad wife of Marco of Oberlin, and Jean Shaeffer wife of Ron of Colonial Park; a sister-in-law, Kathy Maletestinic of Bressler; and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by a son, Philip B. Espenshade on August 13, 2012; three brothers, Charles Espenshade, John Maltestinic and Mark Maletestinic; and a sister, Patricia Ann Maletestinic. Funeral service will be held Friday, June 12, 2015, at 11 AM in Neidig Memorial United Methodist Church, 1251 Highland Street, Oberlin, with The Rev. Dr. E. Ann Walker, his pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Grand View Memorial Park, Annville. Friends will be received for the viewings Thursday, June 11, 2015, from 6 to 8 PM in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, and Friday in the church from 10 AM until time of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to have memorial contributions made to Hospice of Central PA, 1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110; or to the American Cancer Society, 112 Sipe Avenue, Hummelstown, PA 17036.
