Thomas William “ Coach Tommy” Mathews, Jr., age 41, a resident of Morton, MS passed away on Wednesday June 3, 2015 at his home. Visitation will be held on Friday June 5, 2015 from 5:30 PM until 8:00 PM and again on Saturday June 6, 2015 from 12 Noon until 12:50 PM at Wolf Funeral Services in Morton, MS. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday June 6, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Wolf Funeral Services. Graveside Services will be held on Saturday June 6, 2015 at 3:30 PM in the Noxapater United Methodist Church Cemetery in Noxapater, MS. Officiating will be Pastor Tim Lott. Wolf Funeral Services in Morton, MS is in charge of the arrangements. Coach Mathews was a 1991 graduate of West Lauderdale High School where he lettered in football and basketball. He was inducted into the United States Achievement Academy for Mathematics. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He began his coaching career at Meridian Community College as assistant coach to coach George Brooks. For the past three years he has been head basketball coach at Newton County Academy where he led his teams to the District and MAIS South Central Class A Championship. For the past three years he was selected to coach the MAIS All Star Team. He also was an assistant coach for the Newton County Academy Generals Football team. Coach Mathews was the sponsor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and taught economics and government. He was an avid MSU fan, who loved to watch his bulldogs play. Coach Mathews is preceded in death by his grandparents, Otha and Bessie Harmon, Louie B. and Nyleen Mathews; special cousin, Nicole Mathews Castilo. He is survived by his fiance, Tonya O’Steen Franklin of Morton, MS; three daughters, Ansley Reese Mathews of Collierville, TN, Tori Franklin of Morton, MS, Gabbi Franklin of Morton, MS; parents, Joan and Donald Ray Parker of Noxapater, MS, and Tom Mathews of Meridian, MS; one sister, Michelle Stubbs and husband Parker of Madison, MS; one niece, Addie Stubbs; one nephew, Wilkes Stubbs; a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. Pallbearers will be Lake Thomas, Hank Thomas, A.J. Wooten, T.J. Wooten, Endy Alter, Coach Robert Roberts and Coach Little Rob Roberts. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Mathews, Chance Collins, Seth McCormick, Hunter Therrell, Brandon Harrison, Jordan Jones, Jordan Smith, Ethan Parker, Chandler Clarke, Braden Smith, Bailey McDill, Zach Upton, Dalton Hollingsworth, Dawson Blackledge, Luke Alexander, Gunnar Bounds, Dalton Sibley, Tre’ Collins, and Assistant Coach Tanner Smith and the teams bookkeeper, Alexa Roberts.
