Millinocket and Smithfield, Rhode Island - Helen I. (Cobb) Matangelo passed away Sunday, May 17, 2015 at North Bay Manor, Smithfield, RI. Formerly of Millinocket, Maine, she was the wife of the late John B. Matangelo. Born November 22, 1921 in Millinocket, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Charles S. and Grace I. Cobb. She lived most of her childhood years in Gardiner, Maine. Mrs. Matangelo graduated from Farmington State Teachers College in Farmington, Maine, and was the Home Economics teacher at Stearns High School in Millinocket, Maine prior to her marriage. She was an active member of Daughters of Isabella throughout her lifetime. She was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, continually putting her family above all else. She always took such pride in her home and family. She was an avid seamstress and fantastic cook. She learned how to prepare Italian meals from the Matangelo family. She was such a caring and sweet woman always involved in helping others. She was part of the knitting group which met at Ames Department Store weekly to knit warm afghans for the needy. After moving to Smithfield, she became involved in the Senior Center taking part in many activities, including quilting. She is survived by a son, Michael Matangelo and his wife, Kathleen of Conover, NC; a daughter, Mary Matangelo Van Luling and her husband, John of Smithfield, RI; seven grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren, and sister-in-law, Helen Matangelo Beaulieu of Cape Elizabeth, Maine. She also leaves several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Thursday, May 21 at the Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket, with friends invited to visit with the family from 9 A.M. until the time of service. Interment will be at the Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Helen may be sent to the Katahdin Area Support Group, P.O. Box 374, Millinocket, ME 04462.
