Robert Slack

Robert T. “Bob” Slack, 81, of Hummelstown, passed away Monday, May 11, 2015, at his home. Born in Hershey on July 30, 1933, he was the son of the late Thomas F. and Nellie Mae Biesecker Slack. Bob retired from the U.S. Air Force on September 1, 1974 after 20 years serving on several bases stateside and overseas as a contracting Officer’s Warrant. While in the Air Force he joined the AFLC Rife Team winning numerous rifle championships which led to a preliminary Olympic trial in 1968. In 1969 he won the NIRA-NRA national rifle championship with a perfect score. After retirement from the Air Force he was employed as a buyer for the former ITT Terryphone negotiating and managing contracts in Harrisburg for Terryphone, throughout the country for ITT Telecommunications, and in Japan in support of international projects. He also worked as a manager for Radio Shack for many years. In Bob’s retirement years he repaired, built, and did troubleshooting on computers for seniors. Bob was a 1951 graduate of the former Hummelstown High School. He attended Lebanon Valley College on a competitive scholarship before his enlistment in the service. Upon retiring from the Air Force, Bob reentered college, and graduated from Penn State with distinction in May of 1977. Bob was president of the William Penn Pistol League and the Central Penn Rifle Club, and served as Vice President of the Pennsylvania Rifle and Pistol Association. Individual ranking in national championships and membership on national championship teams earned him the coveted NRA Distinguished Rifleman Award. Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mariellyn J. Levitsky Slack, on August 13, 2007. He is survived by two daughters, Christine L. Youngblood wife of Robert of Dauphin, and Jennifer L. Southard of Middletown; seven grandchildren, Nathaniel, Kaylene, Robert, Shendi, Sarah, Rachel, and Rileigh; and one great grandson, Austin Michael. A service to celebrate Bob’s life will be held on Monday, May 18 at 11 AM in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown. A private inurnment will be in the Hummelstown Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home from 10 AM until time of the service.
