Omer Deschaine Coventry, Connecticut Obituary

Omer Deschaine

Omer J. Deschaine, 89, of Coventry, joined his beloved Claire (Samson) in Heaven on Saturday, May 2, 2015. Born July 24, 1925 in Van Buren, ME, he was the son of the late Xavier and Alice (Thibodeau) Deschaine. He was predeceased by all nine of his siblings from that marriage, but his father’s second marriage brought forth eight more brothers and sisters, including Armande (Deschaine) Pelletier and Joseph Armand Deschaine both of Maine, who kept in touch with Omer and were very special to him. He was also very fond of his brother Joe’s widow, Simone Deschaine of Lewiston, ME. Among the numerous family and friends that passed before him was his beloved daughter, Susan. Omer spent his younger days as a paratrooper in the Army, serving both WWII and the Korean War. Omer lived most of his life in Windsor Locks and was a member of the Windsor Locks American Legion. He was a hard worker, and loved keeping busy. After he retired from his job of 30 years at Vulcan Radiator, he continued to work part time as a custodian at JCPenney and then at the Windsor Locks Senior Center. When he wasn’t working, he was tinkering around his home or planting his famous tomatoes in the summer, which were coveted by all his neighbors at the senior housing where he lived. Family was very important to Omer, and he enjoyed driving to Coventry on Saturday mornings for coffee and donuts with his son. He was very proud of his grandchildren, whom he often talked about and loved very much. He is survived by his son, Brian and his wife Cathy of Coventry; his grandchildren, Brian Jr. and wife Kylene of Brandywine, MD, Brad and wife Stephanie of Unionville, Autumn and husband Jeff Seals of Stoughton, MA, April and fiancé Adam Ferrero of Nashua, NH, and Amelia of Coventry; and great-grandchildren, Brian “BJ”, Alexander, Lucas, Zachary, and baby Deschaine (on the way). He also leaves behind his nieces and nephew whom he was very close to, Sandra Fecko of Vernon, Donna O’Neill of Suffield, Elaine Bernier of Cromwell, and Robert Gauthier of Windsor Locks. Special thanks to his home care aides from Companions & Homemakers & VNHSC for all their patience and care during this difficult time. Omer will always be fondly remembered by us as a man with a big heart and an even bigger sweet tooth. Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family from 5 to 7 PM on Monday, May 11, 2015 at the Coventry-Pietras Funeral Home, 2665 Boston Tpke. (Rte. 44) Coventry. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at St. Mary’s Church, Coventry. Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield.
