by Betty “To all family and friends, thank you for the privilege of loving you". Betty Sappington passed on April 26, 2015. She was a Hood River resident and died in her home at Hawks Ridge Assisted Living. She was born August 14, 1924 in Custer, South Dakota. Her parents were Elizabeth Chapman and Harry Wilford Downing. When she was 3 years old they left South Dakota and moved to Avery, Colorado. The family lived there for one year and then followed family to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. She attended schools in Coeur d’Alene, before moving to Pilot Rock, Oregon and graduated from Pilot Rock High School in 1942. She was a graduate of Pendleton Public Schools in Practical Nursing. She was employed at the Oregon State Hospital and Columbia Basin Nursing Home. She and her husband operated an Adult Foster Home for 23 years. Her former husbands were Edd Charlton and James Douthit both of whom have passed away. She later married Bill Sappington in 1972. He passed away in 2002, they were married for 30 years.” Betty is survived by her brother Clyde Downing of Renton, Washington, sons Patrick Douthit of Bingen, Washington, Allen and Ellen Sappington of Portland, Oregon, Larry and Susan Sappington of Carson, Washington, LeVoy Sappington of Hermitage, Tennessee, and Daughters Linda Lopez of The Dalles, Oregon and Leona Thompson of Steilacoom, Washington. Betty leaves a legacy of 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, Homer Richardson, brother Richard “Dick” Downing and daughters, Sandra Noble and Judith Hachtel. Services for Betty are planned for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 2nd, 2015 at Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals • Receptions • Cremations) 1401 Belmont Avenue, Hood River, Oregon 97031.
