Calvin Clifford Simmons, 87, of Winchester, VA died Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Hampshire Memorial Hospital in Romney, WV. He was a resident of Hampshire Health Care Center since August of 2010. Mr. Simmons was born in Cornstalk, WV on April 4, 1928, the son of George Hampton Simmons and Nellie Wheeler Suttle Simmons Jones. Calvin was raised in Hillsboro, WV. He joined the army in November of 1947 and served as a Staff Sergeant. When the Korean War began, his time of duty was extended one year and was sent to Germany until October of 1951. While in the service, he studied and became a skilled mechanic and made his career as a Diesel Mechanic. He also spent many hours on the farm in Stephens City, and enjoyed wood working. He was a member of the Round Hill United Methodist Church in Winchester, Virginia. He was married to the late Mollie Mae Griffiths Simmons on September 19, 1950 until she died of cancer in July of 1967. His second wife, the late Helen Elizabeth Williams Simmons, who he married on June 13, 1970, preceded him in death by two years, seven days, passing on April 8, 2013. Mr. Simmons is survived by two sisters, Mary Ann Beverage of Hillsboro, WV and Dora Lee Brown and her husband, Loren of Sturts Draft, VA; his son, John D. Simmons, wife Linda, of Harrisonburg, VA and his daughter, Deborah J. Simmons Cheshire Fry, of Augusta, WV; his step-sons, Dwight Cox and Darren Cox, wife Carolyn, all of Grottoes, VA, Randall Easter, wife Kathy, of Inwood, WV and Daniel Easter, wife Diane , of Newport News, VA, and Dennis Easter, wife Lynn of Alpharetta, GA; nine grandchildren, Clifford Simmons, wife Patsy, Bonnie Cox, husband Aaron, Katie Cheshire Andrews and Michael Cheshire, wife Drema, Scott Easter, wife Pam, Tim Easter, Tammy Stone, husband Bryan, Emma Easter and Abby Easter, Dwight Cox and Darren Cox, wife Carolyn, all of Grottos, VA; sixteen great grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. He is also preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Elmer Hampton Simmons, William Letcher Simmons and Marion Grant “Skeeze” Simmons. The family will receive friends, Friday, April 17, 2015 from 4-7 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home, Winchester, VA . A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 18, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Michael Cheshire and Pastor Penny Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Shenandoah Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Round Hill United Methodist Church, 2993 Northwestern Pike, Winchester, VA 22603
