Richard Swartz

Richard (Dick) L. Swartz, of Grandview Road, Hummelstown, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2015. Born on November 3, 1930 in Mercersburg, PA to parents, George Swartz and Sylvia Pine Grove. Richard was a graduate of Mercersburg High School, Class of 1949. He received a degree from Shippensburg State College in 1953. He was a veteran of the Korean War, was in the US Naval Aviation Reserve from 1951-1963 as an aviation electronics technician. Dick worked over the years at Joe the Motorist’s Friend and B. F. Goodrich doing part time work. He retired from Chromalloy (formerly TRW) in 1991 as a Senior Industrial Engineer. Dick served on many committees and was very active in his community. He was the finance officer for the Swatara Home Association and served as historian, chaplain, and former service officer for the American Legion Post 265, Hummelstown, and for many years enjoyed being on the Jerry Lewis Telethon on Labor Day to offer the contributions from the American Legion. Dick served on the Hummelstown Memorial Day committee, and was a member of the Optimist Club of Hummelstown, the Hummelstown VFW and served in the Dauphin County Honor Guard for many years. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Harrisburg, served as a Ward Clerk, responsible for finance and computerized membership records. Dick was predeceased by his wife, Jane Swartz, his parents, his brother Chester Grove, Charles Grove, his stepson Gary Berrigan. Dick is survived by his stepchildren, Marlene Frawley (Carlisle, PA), Jane Berrigan (Bloomfield, NJ), John David Berrigan (Dundalk, MD), grandchildren Chris Chubb, Tracey Barrows, Terri Day, Kimberly Day, Brett Day, great-grandchildren Amanda Jo Chubb, Ronnie Dickey, Dylan Day and Kelsey Day, his sisters, Alma (Paul) Martin, Barbara (Glenn) Rotz, Patricia (Bill) Smith, Elaine (William) Thompson and many nieces and nephews. Viewing will be held on Monday, April 6, 2015 from 10:00-11:15 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 4788 Union Deposit Road, Harrisburg with the American Legion service at 11:15 am; the funeral service will follow at 11:30 am. Burial with military honors will be at the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, 4855 Londonderry Road, Harrisburg. A luncheon will follow at the church. Arrangements are being handled by Trefz and Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given in memory of Dick to the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, PA 17036, to help his family with funeral expenses.
