Dr. Norval Rich Obituary

Dr. Norval Stanley Rich, 91, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. Born in French Township, Adams County on April 8, 1923, he was the elder son of Evert and Mary Rich and brother to Maynard Rich, and spent his boyhood on the family farm. Norval graduated from Kirkland High School in 1940. He was drafted in 1943 and served overseas as an Army Medic. Returning to the States in 1946, he attended Taylor University, where he met his wife, Margie Billet, who was both a student and the college nurse. Norval graduated in 1949 with a chemistry degree, and then attended IU Medical School, graduating in 1953. Dr. Rich started his medical practice in Decatur in June 1954, and practiced for nearly 40 years. In addition to his private practice, where he delivered over 2,500 babies and made house calls, he worked as an anesthesiologist at Adams County Memorial Hospital. Norval served as the Adams County Health Officer for 32 years, as well as the Adams Central football team physician for many years. He was awarded the title of the State of Indiana’s Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor O’Bannon in 1998. Norval was a member of the Decatur Missionary Church, and after his move to Fort Wayne attended First Missionary Church. He was a devout Christian with a powerful witness who stressed the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ to his children and to others. Norval was genuinely interested in people’s lives. He had a phenomenal memory and knew the names of most people he met. Norval loved having a big family – he and Margie were the proud parents of ten children – and he was always eager to visit with his children and grandchildren. His children have wonderful memories of the many vacations spent traveling in a motorhome across the USA. Throughout his life, Norval enjoyed cooking, gardening, and managing farmland. He was an avid sports fan and rooted for IU Basketball and the Colts. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margie, and his ten children: Stanley Rich of Fort Wayne, Diane Smith of Bluffton, Keith (Marge) Rich of Kirkwood, MO, Steven (Vicki) Rich of Decatur, David Rich of Monroe, Janet (Chris) Marshall of Corinth, TX, Mark Rich of Kahului, HI, Kevin (Beth) Rich of New York, NY, Cheryl (Jim) Robison of Greenwood, and Laura (Jerry) Gerig of Fort Wayne, in addition to 31 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother. Funeral service is 11 a.m., Saturday, April 4, at Cornerstone Community Church in Decatur, IN, with calling one hour prior. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 3, at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home in Decatur, IN. Officiating will be Rev. Bob Martin and Rev. Floyd Vieth. Burial will be in M.R.E. Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Missionary Church Denomination for Church Planting.
