Frances Ann Woody, 85, of Hood River, Ore., passed away Monday, March 23, 2015, at The Dalles Health and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by her family. Frances was born on July 10, 1929, in Salem, Ore., to George Edgar and Frances Letitia (Wilson) Bailey and grew up in Hood River as Ann Stowddard, graduating from Hood River High School in 1947. She met and then later married Jack Brice Woody on Jan. 22, 1948, at the Asbury Methodist Church. Upon buying 3½ acres just outside Hood River city limits the same year, Jack (mailman) and Ann (homemaker) settled down, built their home, involved themselves in church, Boy Scouts, 4-H, and raised five children, Susan, Jim, John, Sam and Paul. In 1964, when all but one of her kids was in school, Ann hired on part-time in the bakery at Eby’s Grocery Store for three years. In 1967, she began work for Wy’east High School as a library and media aide and retired 25 years later from Hood River Valley High School in 1992. Family, volunteer work, sewing, crafts, photography, and traveling were her passions. Before Jack passed away in 1973 and when the kids were still at home, there were many fun family trips in Oregon and the adjacent states. Starting in the late ‘70s, Ann went on several organized tours, mainly to Europe, Russia, Australia and Africa, and on occasion traveled with her sister, daughter, daughters-in-law and friends. She invited grandchildren along on an Alaskan cruise and visited several places in the U.S. in the company of her son Jim and his family. Ann remained in the house that she and Jack built in the ‘50s until two weeks prior to her death. Volunteering remained an integral part of Ann’s life, tracing it back to her days when she was a student in high school as she was often asked to help in some capacity or another. In the early years with Jack, Ann volunteered with Cub Scouts, as a 4-H leader teaching cooking and sewing, organized the church nursery, helped with the church youth group outings, took care of the hot lunch books for Barrett School, and was a life-long member of the American Legion Auxiliary. After her retirement, Ann volunteered 18-plus years at the Hood River Memorial Hospital, helping in the records office, making tray favors for the patients and goody bags for the children admitted to the hospital. She volunteered in the kitchen at the Hood River Valley Adult Center. Visiting people through Hospice of the Gorge, she often knew and had a history with the people she was assigned to see. When she was an active member of the Portland Alumnae Chapter of Alpha Iota, a business women’s sorority, Ann attended many of their functions including traveling to national conventions with her daughter. She met weekly with longtime friends of the Happy Hands ladies’ group at the Asbury UMC, now part of the Asbury Our Redeemer Partnership. This gave her the opportunity to share her skills at handcrafts to benefit their charity projects. Ann also loved to participate in fun things to do with The Ruby Ragazzas Red Hatters. Ann is survived by her daughter, Susan Horton, and her husband, Ed, of Milwaukie, Ore.; sons, James Woody and his wife, Pam, of San Antonio, John Woody and his wife, Brenda, of Hood River, Sam Woody and his wife, Rebecca, of Tigard, Ore., and Paul Woody of Hood River; and sister, Arlene Henry, and her husband, Jim, of White City, Ore. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Spencer Woody and his wife, Rachel, Michael Woody, Casandra Woody, Misty Federoff, Jackie Campbell-Geary and her husband, Doug, Rachael Woody and her husband, Toby, and Kyle Woody; and four great-grandchildren: Sydney and Daphne Campbell and Lydiah and Lillian Woody. Preceding her in death were her husband, Jack Woody, grandson Peter Woody, and her brothers George, Jim and Doug Bailey. A Celebration of Life followed by a luncheon is planned for noon Saturday, April 4, at the Asbury Our Redeemer Partnership, 1140 Tucker Road, Hood River. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged in remembrance of Ann to one of two nonprofit organizations close to her heart.
