SULLIVAN, Mary Carmel (nee Mulhern)

(August 8, 1928 – March 22, 2015) -

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Mary Sullivan who passed away peacefully at Humber River Hospital with family at her side. She is beloved and missed by her husband James (Jim) Francis Sullivan and her five children Helena, James, Sheila, Denis and Maeve. She was a loving mother-in-law to Lucie Vallee, Rex Warr and Raghu Venugopal and a wonderful grandmother to Aidan Sullivan Sandy, Liam O’Sullivan, Colin O’Sullivan, Ciaran Sullivan Warr, Rowan Sullivan Warr, Nieve O'Sullivan, Finn O’Sullivan and Desmond Djimbate. She leaves her sister Celine Gately (Roscommon) and many cherished relatives and friends. Mary was born in Rookwood, Athleague, County Roscommon in Ireland and was the eldest of ten children. She excelled in her studies and she worked for many years in the civil service in Dublin. Through this work she was able to support her younger siblings to pursue their education. In 1960, she emigrated to Canada and settled in Rexdale where she married Jim, raised 5 children, and built a network of close friends. Mary worked for many years providing child care within her home, and, when her children were raised, she returned to work outside the home, which she enjoyed very much. We will miss and remember fondly her intellect and sharp wit, her love of reading and learning, crossword puzzles, current events and gardening. We will forever remember and be grateful for her determination to see her children and grandchildren thrive and succeed. Mary's Roman Catholic faith and prayer, (especially her devotion to our Blessed Mother) were central to her life to the very end. Our family would like to express its gratitude to Dr. Uri Sagman and the nursing staff at Humber River Hospital and for the very loving and dedicated personal support provided by Patience Gambrah, Anna (Nhan) Ho, Agnes Quianoo and Zelleann Horne. Friends may express their condolences at NEWEDIUK FUNERAL HOME, KIPLING CHAPEL, 2058 Kipling Avenue, Etobicoke, (North of Rexdale Blvd.), on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 from 2pm to 4pm and from 7pm to 9pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 26 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, 2194 Kipling Avenue, at 9:00 am. Interment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. For those who wish, in memory of Mary, donations may be made to Humber River Hospital Foundation or the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Condolences may also be made at newediukfuneralhome.com.
