Gilbert Weir Coughlan, age 97 of Ludington passed away on Wednesday February 18, 2015 at Oakview Medical Care Facility in Ludington surrounded by his family. Gilbert was born on April 12, 1917 in New York City, New York, son of the late James and Margaret (Write) Coughlan. He graduated Commerce High School in 1935. He served in the United States Coast Guard and served in World War II. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Bronze Star. On September 23, 1944 in New York, New York he married Florence Schehl who preceded him in death on July 5, 1983. Gilbert married Jean Lipham on October 18, 1985 in Ludington who preceded him in death on March 10, 1999. Gilbert was a Chief Warrant Officer for the United States Coast Guard for 30 years and he retired on October 31, 1966. Gilbert was a member of The Community Church, Masons, Shriners, American Legion, Optimist, Elks, and Lincoln Hills. He enjoyed golfing, taking pictures and videos, and family gatherings. He was an avid supporter of the Republican Party and United States Military. Gilbert is survived by his son, John Coughlan of Ludington; grandchildren, Brandon (Tiffany) Coughlan of Ludington, Andrew (Ashley) Coughlan of St. Augistine, FL, Jamie (Jason) Lemmer of Ludington; sister, Marion Walsh of New York, NY; stepchildren, Sally Whiteside of Ludington, Linda (John) Patston of Valparaiso, IN, Beverly (Dave) Pierce of Noblesville, IN, Bill (Dana) Lipham of Ledbetter, KY; 9 great grandchildren; 8 step grandchildren and 10 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Florance Coughlan and Jean Coughlan; siblings, Jimmy Coughlan, Anney Foster, Archie Coughlan, Douglas Coughlan, and great grandson, Brandon Taylor. Funeral services for Gilbert W. Coughlan will be held on February 24, 2015 at 11:00 AM at The Community Church in Ludington with Revered John Brown officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington. The family will receive guests for visitation from 10:00 AM until the time of service and also on Monday, February 23, 2015 from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at Oak Grove Funeral Home. Memorial contributions in Gilbert’s name may be directed to Mason County Historical Society Port of Ludington Maritime Museum.
