Alice Spencer Obituary

ALICE CAROL SPENCER Alice Carol Spencer, age 89, passed away the evening of February 7, 2015 at the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. She was born on October 26, 1925 to Vernon Anker and Mary Sophia (Larson) Nelson in the family homestead south of Potter, Nebraska. She lived on the family farm, attended the District 82 country school through eighth grade, and she graduated from Potter High School in 1943. Carol attended Kearney State Teachers College for the 1943 - 1944 term and earned her teaching certificate. She taught at the District 142 Prairie View Cheyenne County one-room country school north of Potter the following three school years On November 23, 1947 Clayton Spencer and Carol Nelson were united in marriage at her mother's home south of Potter. They settled on a farm north of Potter where they built their life together. Carol loved living and working on their farm. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church (now Prairie West Church) in Potter, volunteered with the United Methodist Women, and taught Sunday School for 15 years. She greatly enjoyed socializing with neighbors in the Social Neighbors Club north of Potter. In her spare time she was fond of reading and, later, listening to books on tapes. Clayton and Carol enjoyed traveling, especially when their journeys included visits with family and friends. Perhaps Carol’s favorite pastime was square dancing with Clayton and their many, many friends and the lasting friendships developed through this activity. They were long-time members of the Kimball Promenaders Square Dance Club. Carol is survived by her son Cary (Lynn) of Livermore, CA, daughter Cathy of Wichita, KS, three grandchildren, Anna Unruh (Kyle Brown) of Lincoln, NE, Alexa Unruh (Ben Roller) of Ann Arbor, MI, and Scott Spencer of Livermore, CA, her brother Kermit Nelson (Marjorie) of Dalton, NE, and her sister Deloras Shanholtz of Plattsmouth, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Chauncey, Virgil, and Warren, and sisters Mildred and Marion. Private graveside services will be in the Potter Cemetery. Gehrig-Stitt Chapel & Cremation Service, LLC is in charge of the arrangements. Carol was loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A gathering to share memories will be held at 11:30 Saturday, March 7, in the Prairie West Church Fellowship Hall. Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel to drop off condolences for the family and sign Carol’s register book.
