Phyllis Charles Obituary

Phyllis J.(Corde) Charles was born in Washington, KY on November 3, 1943 to the late Thomas E. Corde and Vernol I. (Hord) Corde. During her early years, she attended a one room (segregated) school in Washington, KY. She was raised by her grandmother (Rebecca Warner Thomas) who she called "mama" and said that mama saw to it that she went to church often. Phyllis graduated from Mason County High School ( first graduating class). Phyllis was close to her father's sister, Sylvia Peters and she spent a lot of time in her home. Phyllis left KY after graduating high school and went to stay with her uncle Carl and his wife, Ann who she loved dearly and referred to her as " Banana" why? I don't have a clue. When Phyllis returned to KY, she entered a LPN program at Hayswood Hospital in Maysville, KY. Afterwards, she moved to Lexington, KY where she worked at Eastern State (Psychiatric) Hospital and met her long lasting friends mentioned below. She and a few of her friends moved to California, and there spent the majority of her life until returning to Ohio 1991 because of the illness of her mother. Phyllis was a thoughtful, strong, independent, gifted, self-taught, creative person-writing poems and songs, artisitc in many forms; self-taught in keyboard and guitar. Her delight was to inspire and encourage. Strangers were attracted to that particular gifting and would engage her in conversations about their lives, in which she really received pleasure, although she would say " I don't know why they are bothering me." She was willing to do the same for family that could accept her particularly method of communicating. When she made friends, they were lifetime friends (David & Elaine, Mike & Sally, Wendy & Donnie, Beryl, Patti and Gretchen) -Many more that cannot be named. Phyllis departed this life at Mount Carmel East Hospital on January 20, 2015, fighting until January 19th was passed as not to depart on her baby brother's birthday.....her precious, precious Mikey. She leaves to cherish her memory immediate family based in Columbus,Ohio brothers Thomas E. Corde, Jr. and Micheal E. Corde, Linda Corde- sister. Aunts: Sylvia Peters of Maysville, KY and Anna Corde of California , Nephew: Renwick Whaley of California with his two sons, Nieces Erin Nicole Corde, with two children and Jalisa Janell Corde, with two children, cousins, and a host of family and friends
