Mr. Roy J. “Buck” Bennett, age 87, of the Finney section of Honaker, Virginia, passed away Sunday (January 11, 2015) at his home. Born December 26, 1927 in North Carolina, he was a son of the late Harden and Alice Townsend Bennett. A World War II veteran, he had served in the United States Army for two years. He had spent most of his life in the Russell County area and was a member of Finney Baptist Church for over fifty years. A retired coal miner, he had formerly been employed by Pittston Coal Company and was a member of the UMWA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Claude Bennett, and three sisters, Hazel Eggers, Ruth Bennett, and Belle Hughes. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors include his wife of fifty-three years, Jeannette Bennett of the home; one son, Brian Bennett and wife, Elsie of Mooresville, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Joseph Bennett of Asheville, North Carolina, and Ashley Bennett of Mooresville, North Carolina; three sisters-in-law, Vivian Rasnake and husband, Noah, Mildred Campbell, and Judy Neal; special nieces and nephews, Marty Stanley, Joey Stanley, Travis Stanley, Beverly Woods, and Donnie Rasnake; many additional nieces and nephews, and a host of friends and family. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Wednesday at Finney Baptist Church with Rev. Stephen Musick and Rev. Larry Burton officiating. Interment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Steve Woods, Jeff Neal, Jonathan Campbell, Jeff Duty, Dustin Thomas, and Monty Albert.
