Irvin Hamlin Obituary

East Millinocket – Irvin E. Hamlin, M.D., 91, passed away Friday, January 9, 2015 at Cummings Health Care in Howland. He was born February 9, 1923 in Pittsfield, the son of Errold and Vera (Jones) Hamlin. Doc grew up in Pittsfield, and was a graduate of the Good Will-Hinckley School. During World War II, he served as a medic in the Army Air Corps, in the South Pacific Theatre, spending time on Guam, Tinian, and Saipan. After his time in the service, he attended Colby College and Tufts Medical School. Upon graduation from medical school, he moved to East Millinocket, where he established a practice that served the Katahdin region for almost 50 years. When he had spare time, he was an avid fisherman and hunter, and also enjoyed harness racing. Doc’s favorite place in the world was Sourdahunk Lake. In his more active years, he belonged to the Masons, the East Millinocket Chamber of Commerce, the Maine Medical Association, the Maine Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association, and the Maine Harness Horseman’s Association. He is survived by three children, Bill Hamlin and wife Becky of East Millinocket, Betsey Kelley and husband Jim of Millinocket, and Jay Hamlin and wife Sheila of East Millinocket; seven grandchildren, Michael Hamlin and wife Erin of Manchester, New Hampshire, Kristie Hamlin of Bangor, Will Hamlin and Steph Gendron of Atkinson, NH, Matthew Kelley and wife Rachel of Fairfield, Connecticut, Antoinette O’Hara and her husband Laurence of Falmouth, Amy McCarty and her husband John of Pembroke, NH, and Jason Hamlin and wife Rosalind of Concord, NH; seven great grandchildren, Becca, Colin, Emily, Vivian, Geoffrey, Olivia, and Avery; a sister, Natalie Nase of Virginia; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Doc was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Ann L. (Milliken) Hamlin; a son, John Hamlin; two brothers, Thurman Hamlin and Charles Hamlin; and a sister, Arlene Wojiski. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Cummings Health Care for the kind, thoughtful, and compassionate care given to Doc over the past two years of his residence there. Friends are invited to visit with the family 2-5 P.M. Saturday, January 24 at the Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket. Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Village Cemetery in Pittsfield. Gifts in memory of Doc may be sent to the Good Will-Hinckley P.O. Box 159 Hinckley, ME 04944.
