Irene (Smith) Hartjen, 74 , died Sat. January 10th, 2015 at the Atchison Senior Village. Mrs. Hartjen has been cremated and funeral services will be Saturday January 31st at 11:00AM at Trinity Episcopal Church. Burial will be in the Trinity Episcopal Garden. Family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 at the church. The Becker Dyer Stanton Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions are suggested in lieu of flowers to the Trinity Episcopal Church or the Atchison Senior Village and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Irene was born on Feb. 23rd, 1940 in Tulsa, OK the daughter of Dr. Noyes and Ruth (Graham) Smith, Jr. She graduated from Bellaire High School, Bellaire TX. She attended the University of Houston, Clark College, and graduated from Furman University with a degree in Health and Physical Education. She and Raymond C. Hartjen, Jr were married on Oct. 1, 1960. She was the wife of an Army Officer and traveled where he was sent, working in the medical field where ever they were. Irene last worked as the office manager for the Radiology Dept. for Indiana University Medical Center. They moved to Atchison in August 1996 and Dr. Hartjen became the Rector for Trinity Episcopal Church. Irene was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Atchison, a member of the Daughters of the King, of the church, and a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. She was a co-founder of the Loaf & Fishes program at Trinity Episcopal enjoyed reading, traveling to with her daughter as often as they could go, and horses. She was very active in the church and community and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Survivors include her husband of fifty four years, Dr. Raymond C. Hartjen, Jr., a son, Raymond C. III and his wife Lori Hartjen, Pleasanton, CA, a daughter, Dr. Ruth and her husband, Krel Hartjen, Cincinnati, OH, and six grandchildren; Noah, Audrey, Sophia, Elijah Hartjen , Olivia and Raymond Hartjen, IV. Her parents and one brother, Noyes D. Smith, III, preceded her in death.
