Willis Gholston
Willis Lynn Gholston, passed away December 28th, 2014 at The Oregon Veterans’ Home in The Dalles, Oregon. Willis was born July 8, 1921 and was 93 at the time of his passing. Services are planned for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 3rd, 2015 at Mosier Grace Bible Church (201 3rd Street Mosier, Oregon 97040) in with a luncheon to follow at the Mosier Grange. Willis was born in Miller, Missouri to Martin Oliver and Daisy Pearl (Snyder) Gholston but moved with his family in his youth to Mosier, Oregon. He graduated from Mosier High School and attended Pacific University in Newberg, Oregon (which is now known as George Fox University). Willis enlisted and served our country proudly during World War II in the United States Coast Guard and later in the United States Navy. After his honorable discharge he returned to Mosier and married Margie Carrie Camp on October 2, 1947. Willis and Margie worked together at the Mosier Post Office he served as Post Master from 1948 - 1978. After retirement he continued volunteering in numerous community organizations including; the Chenowith School District Board, and Hunter’s Safety classes. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, attending high school sporting events, hiking, camping and spending time with friends & family. The Gholston’s passion was volunteering in their community. They were instrumental in organizing the Mosier Meal Site and Senior Center. Willis’s memberships included the Elks Lodge, Lions Club, American Legion, Mosier Grange, Mosier Christian Church and Mosier Seniors. In a February 16, 2000 Cascade Weekly article Willis said it best in regards to his volunterism; “I had so much pleasure in meeting the people and giving them the service I could” said Willis adding that he always enjoys going the extra mile for people and “I’ve been interested in people all my life” in regards to his service and volunteerism for his community. Willis is survived and will be dearly missed by three daughters, Jeanne Reeves (Bill) of Mosier, Marilynn Shaw (John) of Mosier and Molli Gholston of Beaverton; son-in-law, Bob Hager of Grants Pass; three grandchildren, Todd Reeves (Belenda), Carrie Reeves (Rob Siegle) and Kevin Hager (Teresa); five great granddaughters, Savannah Reeves, Maren Siegle, Maggie Siegle, Abigail Hager and Allison Hager. He was preceded in death by daughter, Marlene Hager in 2003 and wife, Margie in 2013. Memorials are encouraged to be made in Willis’s name to American Cancer Society, Guide Dogs for the Blind or the charity of your choice.
