Dorothy Aulenback Obituary

It is with much sorrow that we, Dorothy's girls, announce that our Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother died peacefully on Sunday, Dec, 21st in Bridgewater following a blessedly brief battle with cancer. Dot was born in Brooklyn, the Annapolis Valley on July 16th, 1928 to parents James and Margaret (Moir) Black who immigrated to Canada from Scotland. Dot was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband Jimmy, brothers James, George, Tom and Johnny, sisters Margaret, Jessie, Annie and Elsie and sister Clara in childhood. Mum, Nanny and Nanny upstairs was a wonderful Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother to daughters Peggy Smith (late David), Nancy (Sandy) Marcott. Granddaughters Michelle (Scott) Doucette, Victoria (Trevor Colp) Marcott and Great Granddaughters Caitlyn and Renee Doucette. Dot is also survived by sisters-in-law Ethel Black and Jean Black and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Ridgewood Retirement Home and to the Palliative Care team for their extraordinary care and compassion for our Dot. Thank you also to all those family members and friends who popped in to say Hi! and often brought flowers or treats to brighten up her day. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy #3, Lunenburg from where a memorial service to celebrate Dot’s life will be held on Monday December 29th at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Dr Laurence Mawhinney officiating. Interment will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. Memorial donations in Dot’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church or the Bridgewater United Church would be appreciated by the family. To our lovely Matriarch, You were our best friend, champion coach, cheerleader and sometimes a referee. No one could have had a better advocate. Thank you for instilling in us a sense of values which would help us follow the right path. You recognized the importance of women having an education and the ability to make our own way. When it was needed, there was always help from the Bank of Dot! Your dry, quirky sense of humour was a treat. We will never forget how you much you loved us, worried about us and took joy in our accomplishments. Super Mum, a job well done and may you now be at peace and reunited with those you so loved who have gone on before. Love from your girls XO
