James Mingo

MILLINOCKET – James A. Mingo, Sr., 81, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2014 after a battle with lung cancer. He was born March 11, 1933 in Hampden, the son of R. Stanley and Lena “Etta” (Tyrrell) Mingo. Following his childhood in Bangor, Jim moved to Millinocket where he had a 40 year career with the Great Northern Paper Company, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Paper Makers, served 20 years as president of Local #24, and also served on the executive board of the AFL-CIO. Jim was known for his quick wit. He was also well respected for his leadership and support of civic organizations. He was a proud member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge #1521 in Millinocket, for 55 years and held various positions during that time, including Exalted Ruler in 1977. In addition, Jim served on the board of directors for the Millinocket Regional Hospital for 13 years and the Millinocket Town Council for 13 years, including 2 years as chairman. Jim enjoyed following sports and was a fan of Stearns High School teams, the University of Maine men’s hockey team, the Boston Red Sox, and the New England Patriots. He enjoyed summer days with family at camp on South Twin Lake. He loved a good game of cribbage at the Elks Club. Jim is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 61 years, Beverly (Russell) Mingo and four children: James Mingo, Jr. and wife Cathy of Holden; Sandra Kelley and husband Tom of Fort Myers, FL; Lisa Shorey and husband Phil of Millinocket; and David Mingo of Port Edwards, WI. He is also survived by a sister, Margaret McFarland of Bow, NH; grandsons Timmy, Randy and Joe Shorey; Austin Kelley; Alex, Sam and Aaron Mingo; and great-grandson Holden Shorey. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Horace, and granddaughter Heather. Friends may visit with the family 12 noon – 2:00p.m. Thursday, November 20, at the First Congregational Church of Millinocket, 274 Katahdin Avenue, Millinocket, where a memorial service will start at 2:00p.m, with Rev. Terry Given officiating. The family invites friends to stay for refreshments at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate in Jim’s memory to either the Elks Scholarship Fund c/o the B.P.O. E. Lodge #1521, 213 Aroostook Ave, Millinocket, ME 04462 or the Katahdin Area Support Group, P. O. Box 374, Millinocket, ME 04462. Arrangements by Lamson Funeral Home, Millinocket.
