Madge Barnett Buchanan Obituary

Madge Barnett Buchanan lost her battle with brain cancer Wednesday morning, November 12, 2014 at her home in Erwin. She was born on September 16, 1947 in Poplar, North Carolina. Madge was the daughter of the late Mack and Pearl Hughes Barnett and was preceded in death by brothers Park, Jack, and Clint Barnett. She is survived by her husband of forty-six years, Jim Buchanan and two daughters Becky Buchanan and husband, John Simpkins of Bristow, Virginia; and Crystal Buchanan of Washington D.C; one grandson, Mason Buchanan of Bristow, Virginia; one brother, R.L. Barnett of Kentucky; one sister, Shirley Tipton of Erwin; several nieces and nephews also survive. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Erwin, a member of the Winsome Sunday School Class and taught four and five year old children for a number of years and a founding member of the Erwin Piece Makers Quilt Club. Madge accepted Jesus as her savior at Poplar Freewill Baptist Church and was baptized in Poplar Creek. She attended Poplar Elementary School, and graduated from Tipton Hill High School in 1965. She came to Erwin to work for her brother, Jack Barnett at the Roadside Rest Restaurant. Madge also worked at the Big Hat Restaurant, and at the Elms Restaurant in Erwin where she met her husband, Jim Buchanan. Madge worked for Zak's Furniture from 1990 until 1998 when she retired for health reasons. Madge enjoyed gardening, doing landscaping at her home and working with her flowers and plants. She had a compassion for animals, especially her two cats Jr, and C Cat. She always made sure that her bird feeders were full each morning and fed any animals that might happen to pass by her woods from squirrels to woodpeckers and even an occasional deer or bear. She also enjoyed going to car shows with her husband, Jim and displaying their 1968 GTX Plymouth. For many years she enjoyed their houseboat friends on Boone Lake at Jay's Boat Dock. Madge was an excellent quilter and seamstress and received a Blue Ribbon for her work at the Appalachian Fair. She enjoyed antique and flea market shopping, yearly traveling to Sandals in the Caribbean and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She was a devoted wife and greatly loved by her husband Jim, and her two daughters, Becky and Crystal and adored by her grandson, Mason. Madge’s flowers and shrubs were always well kept and her kitchen always smelled good. Madge’s outgoing personality touched many people over her years on this earth. The love she and her husband Jim shared was one rarely found by most couples. She will be greatly missed by the many people who came to know and love her. The family will receive friends at Calvary Baptist Church Saturday, November 15, 2014, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 P. M. Funeral Service will begin at 2:00 P. M. with entombment in Evergreen Mausoleum following the services. Dr. Mike Womack and Pastor David Crutchfield will officiate. Music will be under the direction of Gary Amos.
